How long is a counselling relationship?

Counselling can be as little as one session or it can be open ended. Maybe you have a specific issue that you feel stuck with and a single session would be enough to help you become unstuck. Perhaps your struggles are more complex and a longer therapeutic relationship is what you feel you need to unpack and explore them and find avenues for change. Maybe you have no idea how long you need to engage in counselling - many people don’t.

This can be discussed at a half price introduction session and it can be reviewed at intervals during the counselling journey. Everyone’s experience is different and the client, as the best expert on themselves, leads the process.

“Thank you so much, I cannot remember when I last felt so anxiety free.” Client, October 2023, session 5.

What happens after I make contact?

When you contact me, I will call or email you to arrange a half price introductory session. In this session, I will gather some information about you and your reasons for engaging with counselling. I will explain the counselling contract including your rights in terms of confidentiality and GDPR.

In our introductory session, you will be able to decide whether you would like to enter a therapeutic relationship with me. If so, we will agree a counselling contract and we will work out a mutually convenient time to meet.

How does counselling look?

A counselling session is 60 minutes. I am a person centred counsellor which means that I will be led by you in terms of what you bring to each session. I will provide you with a space in which you can explore and reflect on the things that are troubling you in safety and without judgement.

I draw on other counselling modalities from the humanistic school to create a tailor made therapeutic experience. Sometimes I draw on my professional background to help you find practical strategies for reducing demands on your emotional resources so you have more space to grapple with your more challenging issues.

The client is always their own expert - your journey will be uniquely yours. Through counselling the client develops greater connection with themselves, awareness of their own needs, and discovers their inner resources for meeting those needs. Counselling can support you to make changes that take you from incongruence and discomfort to authenticity and peace.

“I have learnt so much from talking with you, which is bizarre as I seem to do most of the talking.” Client, October 2023.
